• The British, German, French, Belgian, Irish and Greek Consulates-General in Atlanta, Georgia issued a joint statement on the case of Mr Troy Davis.

The British, German, French, Belgian, Irish and Greek Consulates-General in Atlanta, Georgia would like to draw attention to the  September 19 statement (full text) issued by the European Union on the case of Mr Troy Davis.  While we certainly understand the pain of victims of violent crime and their families, we also recall that no legal system, however thorough, is immune from miscarriages of justice, and with the death penalty, these can never be put right. That is why the European Union has reaffirmed its principled and longstanding opposition to the use of capital punishment under all circumstances.

    Issued on behalf of:
Annabelle Malins, HM Consul General, United Kingdom
Benoît Standaert, Consul General of Belgium
Lutz H.  Görgens, Consul General of Germany
Pascal Le Deunff, Consul General of France
Paul Gleeson, Consul General of the Republic of Ireland
    Vasili Goulousis, Consul of Greece
