The British Consulate General in Chicago launched the first-ever Pop-Up British Consulate in Louisville, Kentucky for the week of 11-15 March 2013. The Pop-Up Consulate was located in a vacated office space in the heart of downtown Louisville and was set up by consulate staff in four days. Hundreds of leaders in Kentucky business, education, philanthropy and government visited the Pop-Up Consulate for events throughout the week before consulate staff returned the space to its original condition by Saturday 16 March. Among the scheduled events are:
a bourbon vs Scotch tasting event with Greater Louisville International Professionals and Young Professionals Association of Louisville
a performance by The Band of the Scots Guards And The Pipes, Drums, Highland Dancers of The Black Watch 3rd Battalion
an open house for high school students interested in studying in the United Kingdom
a luncheon speech by the British Consul General to the World Affairs Council
a business briefing hosted by the World Trade Center

I have been very saddened to hear of the tragic loss of life caused by the tornadoes that have hit the US states of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Georgia in recent days.

My thoughts go out to all those who have been affected, and particularly to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives. I would also like to pay tribute to the efforts of the emergency services, who have been working hard to save lives in difficult conditions.
