On 12 February 2011, I stood in Tahrir with the then Ambassador for nearly two hours. We didn’t say much to each other, we just stood and stared, breathed the amazing spirit of optimism that was sweeping the Square and marvelled at the energy of the young people who were cleaning up the detritus of 18 days of occupation literally painting hope, optimism and confidence in a brighter future for Egypt onto the railings and kerb stones.
